Gianna Lauren releases On Personhood (Forward Music Group) on Tuesday, April 02. She is touring throughout Eastern Canada this April in support of the album. Dates are listed below.
“Equal parts Cocteau Twins, Beth Orton and Sufjan Stevens...”
– Toronto Star (on Some Move Closer, Some Move On)
On Personhood
is a strongly-convicted testament to the Canadian indie catalogue and a
leap forward for Lauren’s repertoire of atmospheric rock. The band
features musicians Justin Nace and J. J. Ipsen (J.J. Ipsen and the Paper Crown), Marshall Bureau (Octoberman, Barzin, the Pinecones), and engineer Andy Magoffin (Two-Minute Miracles, Constantines, Feist, Jenny Omnichord).
On the recording, the band sets a platform for Lauren to stand out in front of the mix as a sultry front woman. “Trouble,”
the lead-off track, sashays like two ships in a dark night. Lauren’s
voice bends to be cordial and breezy, harmony-heavy, and exhibits mighty
tenure in vocal tremolo. “Thread” summons the soundtrack for a
scene in a film when two long-lost siblings reunite and there’s a sigh
of relief from the crowded cinema. The album is a tasteful collection of
original material. Lauren displays vocal tenderness and lyrical
objectivity on people-isms and human nature. As a self-proclaimed people
watcher, the songs convey Lauren’s magnifying glass outlook on human
behaviour.
“…songs
are writ large with atmospheric sounds that give a heavy mood to
observations on life and love in the time of technology.” – Ottawa Citizen
