Noisography does Evolve 2011 - A recap!
Overview, photos and video by Tiffany Naugler
and we did it again! We packed up Camp Dirt, piled into 3-4 different cars and made up to the top of that beautiful hill for another year at the Evolve Music & Awareness Festival.
Lets get the ball rolling right away with our Evolve video montage, featuring artists such as Dub FX, The Belle Comedians, House of David Gang, Logan Hudak, Edward Sharpe & Carmen Townsend, with music by Oh No, Theodore!
This years fest was taken on a little bit differently then any other year.
1st, I was the only Noisography member there so I had to take on the entire weekend myself.
2nd I was also there representing CBC Radio 3 as a photographer, so I didn't actually get a lot of random shots from around our camp and so on.
But in lieu of all that - This was probably the best Evolve to date!
I took in so much music, got covered in so much mud, saw so many old friends (and family!) and got about 12 hours sleep in total by the end of the 4 day fiasco!
When we got to the festival grounds, things quickly turned into a bit of a clusterfuck - as per usual. I don't think anything they do to try to make the gate opening run smoother will ever work - not even if they set up huge flashing lights that spell out "Hey Dumbass! Park here!". We drove in and a security guard stopped us a little way up the road from the gate and said "park here and when they open the gates, everyone will just drive in, in a line". Awesome. So we parked the car and started the party right there. People were blaring music from their car stereos while others danced and hula hooped.
Soon, more cars started to show up though, and without the security guard - things went to shit. At one point there were 3 lanes of parked cars waiting to get into the festival grounds (because no one wanted to believe they actually had to wait to get in? - seriously, what do you think the rest of us were parked there for? - so they just parked in the middle of the road) making it nearly impossible for emergency and vendor vehicles to get out of the fest. It was a little nuts. We tried telling people they had to park on the side of the road but... well, yea.
Once they opened the gates, we left Tim with the car while we carried the tents up to the top of the hill to set up. It had been slightly cloudy and cool for most of the morning, but almost as soon as the gates were opened, the clouds parted and the blistering heat appeared and reeked havoc on everyone.
Amazingly paired with the swarms of flies which all us festival goers disturbed upon stepping foot on the hill - wetting up camp was litterally, a hot mess! Once things were set up and ready to go, we all took a load off, hand a few beverages and then began our weekend of awesomeness.
I started things off with a little SoHo Ghetto on the main stage.
Still being early (in Evolve time) the crowd wasn;t massive or anything, but those who were there, were having a blast.
The most people I have ever seen, in my 7 years of attending Evolve walked through the gates on Friday. Usually the place is pretty full on Friday night but by Saturday night the place is jammed full of tents. This year, I am pretty sure the top of the hill was completely full by 10pm. I saw people carrying there stuff up to the top of the hill, walk around and then walk back down to lower camping areas.
This is why I stress getting there early, every year! hah!
The night continued on with awesomeness...
I had gotten about 3 hours of sleep the night before, so by the time 3am rolled around, i was pretty much toast. Happy toast! But toast none the less. So i jumped in my tent with intentions of just starting fresh in the morning. Well, I work up at 4am on the dot (needed a pee) and heard Logan Hudak spinning down at the Synergy Stage. So, on went the shoes and I grabbed the camera gear and off I went again.
After staying up till waaaay too late on Friday night Saturday morning came up a tad bit too early! I was freezing (as usual) once i hit the hay only to wake up about 3 hours later with the sun cooking me alive in the tent.
I ended up staying pretty grounded at Camp Dirt work the afternoon. Couldn't be helped really. I'm a pale lady and me and the sun don't get along well. I sat in the shade, slathered myself in sun screen and gently took in some of the afternoon activity.
As the night settled in, Camp Dirt (and a good portion of the Evolve crowd) got costumed and the Saturday night shenanigans got underway!
Following in tradition, I stayed up to see the sun rise over the festival Saturday night/Sunday morning. It was brilliant, as last years sunrise was a little underwhelming. This time around the colours were amazing and to be able to stand there listening and watching the wonderful Oka while drinking coffee from The Horn of Plenty, was absolute bliss...
Following another day of no sleep - Sunday was kind of weak.
I'm not going to lie.
The highlight for me, on Sunday was getting to see one of my fav Halifax band (and friends) No Flyers Please play in the Palace Yurt. These guys are a pure rockin dance party and more than deserved to play the festival this year.

Fellow Camp Dirt member and I managed to pend the rest of the night wandering from stage to stage, taking in lots of music and dancing in order to stay warm. We ended up at the NFP camp and set off some late night fire works which we quite the hit with the 3am crowd! We retired shortly after that... only to rise again, before the sun became unbearable, to pack up and head back to civilization.
It was a long weekend of craziness, but so worth every sun burn, bug bite, bruise and mud soaked body part and I can't wait to do it again next year!!
