9:30 pm- 2am
$5
9:30-10:15 ¡Groovera!
11:00-11:45 DEFUNK’T
12:30-1:45 The Retrospect
This show was stop 1 of 5 for the fourth annual NSCC Spring Music Festival put on by the students. Held at Montes in Dartmouth the theme on this eve was Soul Night. Musical Styles represented were Latin, R & B, Funk, Mo-Town, Soul, Fusion and Bop.
The first band was ¡Groovera! ; a 15 member band featuring horns which I haven’t seen in a while. They belted out classics such as Aint No Mountain High Enough made famous first by Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell and later Dianna Ross in 1970.
The second; a ten piece band called DEFUNK’T describe themselves as a “fiery funk fusion group” To compliment this they dressed in red while laying down their solid groove.
The last band was The Retrospect. I was especially impressed with the 3 female vocalists and their song selection. They do a great harmonized version of ‘These Eyes’. For me this was a fresh take on a classic Guess Who tune. Awesome.
All the bands looked like they were having tonnes of fun, lots of smiles and cheers as well as a strong show of support from other NSCC ensembles playing later in the month
Entertainment was extended beyond the talented musicians with the likes of one nameless middle aged dude completely lost in his own world up dancing by himself the whole night. Hats off my friend you have more courage than me. Behind me was a couple making out which reminded me of high school dances back in the day.
Kudos to the sound peoples whose technical support abilities resolved a keyboard issue for the last band. Way to step up in a time of crisis. A disappointing shake of the head to a certain fellow male videographer unaware of people’s personal space when they are recording in a specific location first. I got to know the back of your head quite well.
All kidding aside I had a great time and recommend checking out the rest of their shows this month which can be found on their website: http://nsccmusic.ca/fr_home.cfm
