When we arrived at the Paragon for A Wink and Smile, there was a healthy crowd all ready gathered for complimentary swing dance lessons. At first, being a relative newcomer to the Burlesque scene, I wasn't quite sure how the Paragon would be laid out for such an event. Fortunately all the evening's entertainment was laid out for us on the main stage, and very nicely arranged.

The opening act were The Shakedown Combo, who were, if I understood correctly, from Amherst by way of England – in any case, they showcased some true, rockabilly inspired rock and roll. At first I was a little apprehensive about the lack of a drummer, but the pounding slap bass of Kim Goode and her tattooed upright quickly alleviated those fears. With a little extra percussion from singer Gill Goode, the band was swinging and bopping and no one could resist dancing to their catchy, old school rockabilly tunes.

Of course, the opening band set was just a warm up for the real entertainment of the night, and no doubt the reason the Paragon was pretty much full to capacity – the shapely, sexy, swinging burlesque dancers. With the Trouble Shooters as their backing band, a parade of gorgeous women in tight lingerie strutted their stuff across the stage, much to the pleasure of the crowd. There was no discrimination here: men and women, young and old – everyone likes a good strip tease. While all the ladies put on a fantastic show, I'd have to say my favorite was Miss Molotov, with an alluring fan/feather dance (being the nerd I am, it reminded me of Uhura in Star Trek V).

Other highlights included the Shakedown Combo backed “Fever” featuring Sofia Souffle and a fantastic 2 piece Pink Panther showdown. Needless to say, if you missed this show, you missed a knockout combo of beautiful, seductive ladies, and hip shaking rock and roll. Of course I would be remiss not to mention Miss Molotov's second act in which she lived up her name sake with some tremendous fire breathing skills. It was a potent combination, though for a brief moment I found myself distracted with fears that the aging, potentially asbestos stuffed ceiling of the Paragon would catch on fire and bring the whole place down to twigs in an instant like a cartoon fire.

After two sets of Shakedown Combo, another round of fantasy fulfilling, “by the book” stripteases, and the fire breathing finale, the crowd was getting plenty hot and bothered. Fortunately the Trouble Shooters kept everything moving with another set of classic rock and roll tunes. While rumour has it that the Paragon may be closing it's doors, there's plenty of action still ahead for Halifax, with word of another burlesque show in the near future. What can I say – who doesn't love watching lovely ladies dancing to swinging rock and roll? Check out all the pictures and videos of all the action below, and keep you eyes peeled for another round in a few months, you don't want to miss it.
