Review by Dan Nightingale
Instruments - http://instruments.bandcamp.com/
Kuato - http://kuatoband.bandcamp.com/
Union Of The Snake - www.uots.tumblr.com
Early Show - 7:00pm
$10 at the door
Instruments will be releasing a new Remix LP as well as Kuato will have a new EP out.
Union of the Snake. This was only their second Halifax show, and it was just as loud and in your face as last time, with new songs and faster drumming. While there was a lot of feedback, most of it intentional, and there was really no way to make out the vocals, it was fast and dirty and snarling and highly enjoyable. No word as of yet on a record from these guys but given their show schedule, it could be a few years.
Kuato started out heavy on the suspense as always, fresh off a week of touring the Maritimes. They've begun the fine art of perfecting the rock and roll light show, with the multi talented Trevor Murphy manning the light board and providing the perfect atmosphere for the bands brooding, loud, hypnotic instrumental rock vibes. With two EPs, touring, and a light show already under their belt, the future looks promising for Kuato; here's hoping for a full length, a full tour, and a full light and sound spectacle to rival current Halifax A/V specialist Rich Aucoin (all though less parachute and more fog machine would probably be more fitting for Kuato)
The always mighty Instruments were sadly down a member this evening, but the clockwork, minimalist tone perfectionists didn't disappoint. Metronomic drum beats, rumbling atmospheric samples, bass and guitar switch ups, and sweeping synth sounds gave a full taste of new songs, and the vocals were probably the best I've heard at an Instruments show. As full as the band sounded, it would be great to hear them with all 3 members; hopefully they too can make an exception in their “once a year” or so show schedule and relive the set performed for a rare tour for the Halifax crowd.
