NEWS: Jay Crocker Releases Brain Freeze Video, Hits Final Leg of Co-Stars Tour

HPX 2010 - Jay Crocker 02Saved By Radio recording artist from Calgary, Jay Crocker, has released the debut video from his latest album Co-Stars. Brain Freeze director Joe Kelly was inspired by Jay’s creative approach to recording.

"I was inspired by Jay's analog process in his music creation, even though there was a lot on digital technology to create the finished product. The layers were all created using 16mm film and analog video tape. The background animation was created by printing ink onto clear 16mm film. I transferred the film to video and mirrored the frame to create an animated "Rorschach ink blot test". The foreground images were degraded by dubbing and redubbing the image using a VHS tape recorder and manually hacking the recorder to de-res the image."

Colliding old-school pop song craft with experimental tendencies, Crocker’s sense of composition and adventure is unleashed in full over Co-Stars 10 quick-moving tracks. At one moment pulsating and severe, while at the next gentle and serene, the force behind Jay Crocker’s latest album is one grappling with the possibilities of sound, wide eyes and blown eardrums echoing in Calgary’s sprawling beltline. Co-Stars was released on February 15 and Jay brings his new album home to Alberta in the next few days.

“Calgary producer and music magician Jay Crocker makes songs that are gnarly and smooth, sweet and prickly, and that don’t mind throwing an extra beat in while you try to dance. Crocker treats pop music like an experimental work in progress. If Frank Zappa were still alive, he’d be listening to this record.” - Robert Everett-Green, The Globe and Mail

“His all-analog, equally raw and refined palette ranges from electronic gurgling to sepia-toned folk/pop to plonking electro-pop to glam rock riffage to reverb-drenched mantras. The crude, obscure, near-ambient moments complement the richer, fully developed songs, drawing you into Crocker’s wondrous musical world.” - The Montreal Mirror 8/10
