OBEY Convention Music and Arts Society announces initial line-up and Early Bird passes for 10th edition festival, OBEY X, taking place May 25th - 28th 2017

March 7th 2017- Halifax, Nova Scotia- The sonic Spring returns with Atlantic Canada’s most adventurous music and art festival, the OBEY Convention. Happening May 25th to 28th at alternative and historic venues throughout the city of Halifax, OBEY Convention showcases the very best of local, national and international talents working across genres and mediums, providing an essential platform for radical expression in the modern musical landscape.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the beloved east coast institution. But rather than pausing to look back fondly at a decade of exploration, OBEY X promises to continue pushing forward, pursuing the confounding values of intensity, inclusion, confrontation, transcendence, accessibility, innovation, education and auditory onslaught on which it is founded.

As ever, our programming centres around performers who we feel provide a vital and relevant response to the contemporary world. Among those vital voices sounding out at this year’s festival are the operatic Indonesian doom-folk duo Senyawa, Philadelphia’s outré hip-hop activist Moor Mother, industrial NYC thrash-metal combo Uniform, legendary new age beacon Laraaji, insurgent acid-house bunker-junkers Pelada and Hull, Quebec’s bilingual post-punk powerhouse FET.NAT.

Beyond musical offerings, OBEY X will see the return of Art In Fest, The Khyber Centre For The Arts’ standalone celebration of contemporary art, as well as The Everyseeker Symposium, a lecture series exploring the intersections of music, sound and listening across disciplines (presented in partnership with The Fountain School Of Performing Arts). In keeping with our attempts to include as many people a possible, over half of this programming will be free and open to the public while all of our unlicensed events will be free for people under 19 years of age.

A limited number of specially-priced Early Bird passes are on sale now until March 28th when we’ll reveal a second wave of artists and other happenings. Passholders are guaranteed access to all ticketed events during this gnarly weekend. Don’t delay, snag a pass from Ticket Halifax pronto!
