For the 11th year, the Halifax Pop Explosion Music Festival renews its commitment to presenting a music conference designed to educate, inspire, and entertain. Taking place at the Halifax Central Library from October 20-22, 2016 the XPAND Music Conference - presented in association with FACTOR, Heritage Canada, and CIMA - features a diverse series of components aimed at strengthening and growing the Halifax music community.

The revamped conference model offers the chance for artists, industry professionals, and students to not only learn from industry leaders, but also to focus on hyper-local topics in an effort to bolster and broaden the city’s historic music scene. Among other sessions, XPAND presents conversations about accessibility, youth art programming, and legislative barriers in Halifax, a festival and venue town hall, FACTOR 1 on 1 sessions, an exploration of DIY and all ages programming, and more. Many of these sessions are open to the public and are free of charge thanks to a partnership with the Halifax Central Library.

XPAND also hosts two keynote speakers: Martin Atkins on Friday, October 21 and Talli Osborne on Saturday, October 22.

Martin Atkins is the definition of entrepreneurial activity in cultural arts endeavors with over 35 years in the music business spanning genres, borders, and industries. He was a member of Public Image Ltd and Killing Joke, he founded The Damage ManualMurder Inc., and industrial supergroup Pigface, and has contributed to Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. He is also the owner of Invisible Records and Mattress Factory Recording Studios, and the author of two books - Tour:Smart, Welcome To The Music Business….You’re F*cked!, and Band:Smart. Atkins is also the Music Business Dept Chair at SAE Chicago.

Talli Osborne is an inspirational speaker, a punk rocker, and one of Sir Richard Branson’s Top 10 Most Inspirational People. Born missing her arms and bones in her legs, Osbourne began speaking at events as a teenager, sharing her experiences with fellow amputees and becoming a mentor for people with physical challenges. Since then, she has brought her story to schools and clubs across the country, has been the keynote speaker at many corporate events, and presented her very first TED Talk last year. Talli Osborne is a recognizable figure in the global punk rock scene, and continues to front melodic-punk act The Talliband.

The First Annual Canadian Label Summit

The XPAND Music Conference also introduces the first annual Canadian Label Summit, which brings over 30 regional, national, and international label representatives to Halifax for a focused series of panel discussions, roundtable talks, and networking events. Among others, representatives from labels such as Sub Pop RecordsWarp RecordsLast Gang Records, and Glassnote Records, will be on hand to participate. Also presented in association with CIMA, the Label Summit - the first of its kind in Canada - offers a unique opportunity for labels championing artists on a variety of spectrums to discuss industry challenges, examine business models and shifts, and present new findings, all while being given the chance to see the best and brightest homegrown talent in action throughout the course of the music festival.
Over the course of two days, delegates and participants will dive into sessions that discuss how labels can ensure maximum impact for their artists in the era of surprise album drops, how to sell full-length records to a seemingly single-focused market, how to manage controversial or outspoken artists, how to adapt distribution to changing the changing marketplace, and more.
“We are so excited to introduce this new event as part of the XPAND Music Conference,”
says James BoyleExecutive Director of the Halifax Pop Explosion
“Showcasing bands continually ask for more interactions with labels, and this year we’ve delivered in a big way. The Label Summit is a unique opportunity for emerging artists to meet with some of the best labels in Canada, the US, and Europe, all while creating the space to build a stronger music economy here at home.”
