The Mighty Northumberland were a great start to the evening; normally I am very much not a fan of the singer/songwriter, one man and guitar type act. But this was an fantastic fresh take on the genre. Complete with harmonica, the effect was what I imagine people seeing Bob Dylan or Arlo Guthry for the first time would have felt. Weaving intricate tales of love and stoned antics, unable to hold back the occasional laugh.
Robert Loveless were a quirky and excellent band, with some excellent guitar work. i suspect the vocals would have been even better on a more suitable PA, but the band rocked sounded tight and their songs were catchy and original. My favorite part of going to shows is still finding bands that you didn't know existed, that seem to have somehow spent years in a basement perfecting their craft just to play obscure shows in tiny theatres. I'll definitely be keep an ear out for more from these guys.
Before lighting to the full set, we were treated to the debut of the new Chief Thundercloud video; produced for the opening track on his new tape, the video framed the bleak, modernist sound of the song, mysterious and haunting in fading images. As the set proper started, the astonishing raw emotion of the new songs was evident. At first backed by a hot shot band who brought power and sheer volume to the simple and effective songs, Curry stripped down to just guitar and vocals before finally ending off with a jaw dropping accapella that showcased his place as one of the best vocalists in the Maratimes.
