Internationally-acclaimed, Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd returns to Halifax this summer to perform in support of his latest release Spirit Bird at Olympic Hall on Thursday, July 18 at 8 p.m.
From 2002’s To Let, his first studio album, through to 2007’s White Moth, Rudd gradually refined his globally-influenced collage of world music – a matchless mixture of reggae, funk, blues, folk, and nearly every other sort of song with the ability to stimulate people’s spirits. With 2008’s Dark Shades of Blue, though, the world was welcomed into a darker, more somber side of Rudd’s music. That metaphorical earthquake manifested in the form of the most tumultuous year in Rudd’s personal history, and one he was more than happy to put behind him when starting to pen Koonyum Sun.
As a songwriter, Rudd has always been able to place complex ideas into heartfelt words with a universal simplicity. Having covered vast musical ground with his previous albums, Spirit Bird and the lead single “Follow The Sun” is the familiar sound of Rudd's earlier work as an ambidextrous solo artist. His voice, his guitar and his message; carried along with gentle rhythms and musical textures.
Of his live performance, The New York Times said, “...he struck a sure bond with his jam-happy audience, encourage rapture as well as a sense of belonging.”
Since his debut, Rudd has travelled the globe, performing at the world’s biggest festivals, including Glastonbury, Japan’s SummerSonic, Australia’s Byron Bay Blues Festival, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits.
