All signs pointed to absolute mayhem at The New Palace on Day 1 of the Halifax Pop Explosion. Featuring some local talent and a trio of Toronto based party stompers, the Honda Civic Garage Party proved to be a pretty massive kick-off to this year’s edition of HPX.

Up first was Jeremy Glenn who spun a bunch of mellow beats to get the crowd warmed up for the evening. Attendance was still pretty low at this point, but Jeremy had a few early birds dancing. Dancing like fools.

After a short break the “DJ battle” begun, featuring two local guys, DJ Dartmouthian (Everett Stone) and P-80. While Stone played a fair amount of original tunes, he was easily and brutally outclassed by P-80, who absolutely unleashed on the ever-growing crowd. P-80 dropped some of the biggest beats I’d heard in a long time, and showed a finesse that Stone was missing. In the end, and by crowd decision, P-80 was crowned the victor.

Keys N Krates are a pretty much just a party band. Don’t get me wrong, they’re a pretty good party band, but for the most part KNK put new twists on the songs that we grew up with as well as a few newer dance and hip hop tracks. While the presentation was pretty interesting (keys, live drums, and a DJ), KNK did little more than lull the crowd into a false sense of security.

I don’t think anyone at the Palace was ready for the absolute pummeling that Zed’s Dead let loose on us. They blew my mind into a trillion pieces, and then used unrelenting bass to glue it back together. Never, ever, ever have I witnessed such an all-encompassing display of absolute digital mastery; Zed’s Dead had the crowd bouncing for well over an hour, and left us sweaty, depleted, but completely satisfied. The dance floor was basically a moshpit, a very colorful, mostly stoned moshpit; elbows were flying, people were pushing, but everyone had a chemical smile on their face. If you missed it, you missed out. Zed’s Dead are beasts, dubsteppin’, bass droppin’, trigger fingerin’ monsters, treading territory that we never see here in Halifax. If tonight is any indication, HPX is going to absolutely own this year’s festival scene.
