Our last show of 2011 started off like most Gus' shows: with a pretty empty bar, and no sign of the bands (or their drum kit). Fortunately band members soon appeared out of the woodwork and the audience swelled to a respectable crowd of post-christmas homecomers and hangarounds.

Scribbler kicked off the night with their official return from hibernation. The band packed in lots of new songs, and fresh takes on old songs, and were probably tighter than they had sounded in quite a while. I'm told the band has plans for a new video and releases on the newly minted Radiator Records label.

Monomyth took the evening for a twist, fusing dark, stripped down garage rock drumming with vintage surf riffage. With members of Quivers, Bird World, Gideons, and more, the band's No Wave inspired tunes blended melodious breakdowns with Velvet Underground-esq drum beats and monotone guitar strumming. Three part vocals rounded out the band's tight and highly enjoyable set.

Headlining the evening was Each Other, the newest reincarnation of York Redoubt/Long Long Long collaborators Brad LaHead and Mike Wright, now featuring Halifamous drummer/legend Christian Simmons. The band, now based out of Montreal (should there be a “post-Halifax” label just for bands freshly arrived in Ville de Montréal?), continues to build on the jangling guitar dualism and strong vocal interactions of their previous projects, with the expected quirky, catchy drumming tying it all together. Look forward to a record, then breaking up, then forming again with a new name. I kid, I kid. Sort of.
